Hunting from a high stand is a traditional and respectful form of European hunting, particularly common for harvesting species such as fallow deer, roe deer, and wild boar. Following the hunting calendar, this activity can be practiced year-round in open and non-fenced territories managed by organizations like G&G Hunting Services.
One of the distinguishing aspects of this hunting method is the high likelihood of encountering quality trophies. The hunter, accompanied by an experienced guide, ascends to the high stand (a raised platform) at dawn or dusk, when wildlife is most active. The guide plays a crucial role, assisting the hunter in selecting the animal to harvest by the quotas established by annual wildlife censuses. These censuses are essential for ensuring sustainable wildlife management, and respecting the natural balance.
A key aspect of this practice is respecting the animal, even in choosing the shooting distance. The primary goal is to avoid injuring the animal unnecessarily, ensuring a quick and humane kill. The experienced guide, together with the hunter, carefully evaluates the distance and shooting conditions to ensure the shot is precise and lethal, minimizing the animal's suffering.
Additionally, each guide has a dog trained to track wounded animals, ensuring their recovery, usually the morning after the hunt. This approach demonstrates a great respect for animals and nature in general.
Finally, the harvested game is subjected to rigorous veterinary checks before being used in the preparation of delicious and often surprising dishes, which may be unfamiliar to some but are definitely worth trying.
